Using Data to Increase Your ROI and Machine Utilization

We know connecting machine tools gives you a wealth of data. But connectivity and data work together, so you’ll need a system in place to measure the data that’s collected. Machine utilization and productivity can be quickly increased when you know where to implement process improvements.

Know Your Baseline

Connectivity gives you increased visibility into your operations and allows you to pinpoint any inefficiencies in production. First off, you need to know your actual machine utilization to measure productivity. If you don’t know machine utilization, you’re not maximizing production.

Start by observing how your shop operates – how long is your cycle time and the length of any unplanned downtime. You’ll be able to see how every area of your manufacturing process is impacted by the next, and how a connected system increases your visibility and easily identifies machine stoppages and issues before they arise.

Establish Process Goals

Along with investing in the tools and processes that allow you to gather data from your machines, it’s essential to determine goals. Do you want to reduce setups, cycle time, downtime or take on more jobs? Establishing goals allows you to concentrate on specific data points that are relevant to your shop floor’s productivity.

With a goal in mind, you’ll be able to figure out the steps you need to take to get there, whether that means regularly performing preventive maintenance or finding room for faster part changeover.

Invest in Continuous Improvement

You can see the impact of the improvements you’ve made and potential areas of growth by continually analyzing machine data. The data gives you the power to make necessary adjustments to boost productivity.

Process improvements are not a one-and-done action. With new projects, new machines, and new materials, and the ever-changing conditions of your shop floor, it’s essential to maintain a high level of productivity.
